AVG Solar Hot Water Valve Pump Kit for Grundfos UPS 15-20 CIL2 Circulating Pump

Overview

The Australian Valve Group (AVG) Pump Kits for Grundfos 15-20 CIL2 Circulation Pump include 2 BFU25Q15C pump unions, a FM15C flow meter, a HTCV15F-15C Non-return check valve and a hexagon socket. Australian Watermark Approved. This AVG pump kits are the most commonly used pump kits in Australia for split solar hot water systems which spec a Grundfos UPS 15-20 CIL2 circulation pump. 

This kit is intended for a brand new solar hot water installation or as a direct replacement for your original OEM pump kits in your solar hot water systems, in which the original solar check valve may be deteriorated or the flow meter glass has been compromised being cloudy or cracked. It is also a popular retrofit kit in systems which may never come with any solar rated check valve or flow meter. This retrofit can significantly improve your solar system's efficiency and service life for the pump, by reading the installation notes below.

Set Up Notes

1. The arrow on the black composite base of the Grundfos CIL2 15-20 pump indicates the flow direction. This direction can be altered by undoing the 4 Allen key bolts and rotate the pump to your desired direction. 

2. The Grundfos CIL2 15-20 pump bearings are water lubricated on either end of the rotating shaft. It is critical that during installation, the pump's shaft must be parallel to the ground. Failing to do so will starve the upper bearing of water lubrication and wear out prematurely. Consult me if not sure how to locate the bearings and the shaft orientation.

3. During Summer weather, the solar system can enter a state known as stagnation after the tank temperature has reached top out. In this scenario, the water in the solar panels are super heated up to 180°C in flat plates and 250°C in evacuated tubes. This water wants to push back down to the pump. A solar rated check valve must be installed between the pump and the solar collectors to prevent this back flow. The absence or a failed check valve can result in the pump burnt by the back flow. Most failed pumps are caused by this. I sell the correct solar rated check valve in my store.

4. The matching pump unions are highly recommended for a hassle free installation. Sold separately in my store.

5. When unrestricted, the pump is capable of pumping 4L/min flow in most cases. However, the ideal flow rate is set to be between 1L/min to 2L/min when the Grundfos CIL2 15-20 pump is at its minimum power of 20W. This is achievable in most single and double story houses. Through lab testing and software simulation, this flow rate will promote the stratification in your storage solar tank, maintaining the usable hot water at the top rather than mixing up and creating a tank full of lukewarm water. In winter especially, the slower flow rate can increase the solar return water temperature. The flow regulator/meter to set the flow rate can be bought from my store or as part of a kits.

6. This Grundfos CIL2 15-20 pump is also a popular swap for solar systems originally using other pumps. Contact me for how to retro fit or checking the compatibility with your brands. If your solar controller is hard wired to your controller, this pump can facilitate also by removing the electrical cover and exposing the wire terminal inside ready for hardwiring instead of plug in lead supplied.

Thread dimensions/size note

Australian BSP thread size names can be confusing. The mm and inch naming system are only nominal conventions, they are not the physical measurements of the thread size. E.g. a common 15mm (1/2") fitting will have an actual external male thread diameter or an internal female thread diameter measurement of 20.995mm (0.825"); 20mm (3/4") fitting likewise will measure 26.441mm (1.041")
